Bulimia nervosa is a severe, life-threatening disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of uncontrolled binge eating followed by self-induced vomiting or other purging methods (e.g. laxatives, diuretics) in an attempt to avoid weight gain. Similar to people going through Anorexia, persons with Bulimia may base a large part of their self-esteem on their body shape. Consequently their binges may be surrounded by shame and carried out in secrecy, hiding their traces from family or room-mates.
